On March 25, 2026, the political landscape of West Bengal shifted massively. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its third list of 19 candidates for the upcoming state Assembly elections. In a historic move, the RG Kar victim mother BJP ticket became official. Ratna Debnath, the mother of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in August 2024, will contest from the Panihati constituency. Consequently, her agonizing fight for justice has directly moved from the protest streets to the electoral battlefield.
The Relentless Quest for True Justice
Ratna Debnath’s entry into politics is entirely driven by systemic failure and a deeply personal tragedy. Following the horrific 2024 incident, the CBI took over the case due to massive bungling by the Kolkata Police. Although a Sealdah court sentenced the civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, to life imprisonment in January 2025, the victim’s parents feel true justice was completely denied. They firmly believe the state machinery actively destroyed vital evidence to protect powerful individuals involved in a larger conspiracy. Therefore, Debnath explicitly stated that her sole aim in joining the BJP is to secure real justice for her daughter and ensure the absolute safety of women across Bengal.
The High-Stakes Battle in Panihati
By accepting the BJP ticket, Debnath is taking a bold, direct stand against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). She will face a fierce battle in North 24 Parganas against TMC candidate Tirthankar Ghosh, the son of the outgoing MLA, and CPI(M)’s Kallatan Dasgupta. She aggressively accused the Mamata Banerjee government of completely failing to safeguard its citizens. She also called out the Left for merely using her daughter’s death for their own political mileage. Furthermore, Debnath remains highly confident, declaring that if she wins, it will actually be a massive victory for the people of Panihati who have forgotten how to protest.
TMC’s Panic and Complete Hypocrisy
Unsurprisingly, the ruling party is completely rattled by this bold move. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh immediately went on the defensive, calling her political entry “hypocrisy” and desperately deflecting by bringing up past crimes in other states. However, the TMC conveniently ignores its own massive institutional failures. As BJP leader Amit Malviya rightly pointed out, the Mamata Banerjee government attempted to suppress the truth, hurried the cremation, and heavily tampered with the crime scene. Ultimately, the ruling party is panicking because fielding Abhaya’s mother directly exposes their catastrophic failure regarding law and order.
The Road to the 2026 Bengal Polls
With the West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29, the BJP is clearly making women’s safety the central election issue. By fielding Ratna Debnath alongside a strong roster of candidates, the BJP is directly challenging the 15-year rule of the TMC. This specific election in Panihati is no longer just about political power; it is heavily charged with raw emotion and a massive demand for accountability. The people of West Bengal will now decide if a grieving mother’s fight for justice can successfully uproot a deeply entrenched and corrupt political regime.
