Spit Jihad in Uttarakhand: Chef Adnan Caught Spitting on Rotis

Must Read

Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has once again been shaken by a shocking act of deliberate contamination, another case of “spit jihad.” A viral video from Uttarkashi shows a restaurant chef, identified as Adnan, spitting on rotis before placing them in a tandoor at Zaika Restaurant, located near the Bazaar police station.

The video sparked outrage across the state, especially among local Hindu organizations who demanded strict legal action against both the accused and the restaurant management. Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal detained Adnan and handed him over to police officials, calling the act not just unhygienic but a deliberate insult to religious and cultural sensibilities.

Police Take Swift Action

Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police Sarita Doval confirmed that the accused has been taken into custody and a case filed under relevant sections of the law. The police have also initiated an investigation into outsiders living in the area and have recommended cancellation of Zaika Restaurant’s food license.

“The act is unacceptable on both moral and legal grounds,” SP Doval stated, adding that food safety authorities have been alerted to conduct surprise inspections at eateries in the district.

Shops in the vicinity, particularly those run by members of the Muslim community, closed temporarily amid rising tensions. Authorities deployed additional personnel to prevent escalation and maintain peace.

Pattern of Similar Incidents

This is not an isolated case. In recent months, multiple such incidents have been reported in Uttarakhand.

  • In Bageshwar, a man was caught spitting on rotis during a local fair.

  • In Mussoorie, another case involved a tea vendor allegedly spitting into cups before serving customers.

Each incident drew outrage and demands for tighter regulation under the Dhami government, which had already strengthened food safety norms after earlier cases surfaced. Yet, such acts persist, raising questions about enforcement and public awareness.

Cultural and Legal Implications

For many Hindus, food is not just sustenance, it is Prasada, an offering linked to purity and sanctity. Any deliberate contamination, therefore, strikes at both faith and public health. Legal experts note that such acts, though prosecuted under food safety and IPC provisions, also fall within the purview of Section 153A for promoting enmity and Section 295A for outraging religious feelings, if intent can be proven.

Local organizations have urged the government to classify such deliberate acts as aggravated offenses, arguing that they carry both communal and health implications.

Public Anger and Social Reactions

Social media has amplified the outrage, with thousands of posts demanding exemplary punishment for Adnan and the restaurant owner. Hashtags like #SpitJihad and #FoodTerrorism trended across platforms, with users tagging authorities and calling for wider crackdowns on unhygienic practices disguised as religious contempt.

Many users also questioned how such acts continue despite past arrests and media exposure. Some highlighted the need for regular surveillance and background checks for food service employees, especially in religious or tourist towns like Uttarkashi, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.

A Wake-Up Call for Devbhoomi

The latest case underscores a larger issue, public vigilance and food safety accountability. Despite multiple exposures of similar incidents, the pattern has not stopped. This persistence reveals not just a law-and-order concern but a growing challenge to social trust and cultural respect.

In today’s digital age, where such videos circulate widely, every act of defilement erodes public confidence and deepens divides. Authorities must ensure swift justice, not only to punish but to deter.

A Word of Caution

While this incident has rightly provoked outrage, it also serves as a reminder for citizens to remain cautious about where they eat. If someone can spit in food, they can also mix harmful substances that endanger health and life. Hygiene is a matter of both safety and sanctity, and negligence can no longer be tolerated.

Devotees and locals alike are urging the government to extend routine inspections, mandatory CCTV coverage in restaurant kitchens, and severe penalties for any act that violates public trust.
