RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent remarks on India’s demographic balance ignited a debate far beyond numbers. Speaking in New Delhi during the RSS centenary lecture series, “100 Years Journey of RSS: New Horizons,” Bhagwat urged Indian families to have at least three children. His request was both to stabilize population growth and to protect the long-term interests of the Hindu community.
His statement may sound simplistic, but the concerns underpinning it are deeply rooted in data, history, and geopolitics.
India’s fertility rate is dropping to 1.9 births per woman, well below the replacement level of 2.1. Thus, the country risks walking into the same demographic trap that crippled Japan, Europe, and now China. At the same time, illegal migration and religious conversions are reshaping India’s demographic realities in ways that official statistics often underplay. Mohan Bhagwat’s message, therefore, is not just about population – it’s about the future of Bharat itself.
India’s Demographic Decline vs. Global Reality
India is usually seen as a 1.5 billion-strong nation. However, this demographic giant is now facing a slow but undeniable decline in fertility. This uneven decline means that while Hindus and others are shrinking, the Muslim population continues to grow steadily. The 2021 census states that Muslims make up about 14–15% of India’s population.
However, projections suggest Muslim Population will rise significantly by the 2027 census, possibly touching 18% or more.
Globally, countries with declining populations are struggling. China’s population crisis—its fertility rate is down to 1.0. Coupled with low marriage rates and higher divorce rates, this shows a society in crisis. Thus, while the official figures state 1.0, many analysts suggest that the actual fertility rate may be much lower.
Additionally, China suffers from economic slowdown, labor shortages, and an aging population dilemma. Japan and the EU, with similar trends, are forced to open their border to import migrant labor. Thereby, fundamentally changing their cultural and demographic fabric.
If the fertility rates continue to decline – India may soon face the same crossroads that China, Japan, or the EU stand at.

Illegal Migration and Conversion: Hidden Drivers of Demographic Imbalance

Illegal Migration
West Bengal and Assam remain ground zero for illegal Bangladeshi infiltration. Time and again, reports have shown that Rohingyas and Bangladeshis caught inside India often possess Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and even voter IDs, thanks to local political patronage.
- Union Minister Kiren Rijiju revealed that over 40,000 Rohingyas had settled illegally in India, with many concentrated in West Bengal and Jammu.
- Operation Sindoor helped Bharat identify numerous Pakistanis and their children living off Indian welfare schemes within the borders.
- Jharkhand tribals face deliberate demographic engineering where illegal immigrants are marrying tribal women. The ghustpethiye dupe tribals out of land and panchayat control.
- In 2021, the Court ruled TMC MP Alo Rani Sarkar was a Bangladeshi national. In 2024, Malda Panchayat elections winner, TMC leader Lobely Khatun aka Nasia Sheikh, skipped court dates and was stripped of her position when she chose not to face questions over her nationality. Thus, West Bengal is labelled as the “GO TO” place for Rohingyas and Bangladeshi Muslims to forge papers and generate fake IDs.
- While the Assam government is cleaning out Miya Muslims, the West Bengal government has repeatedly refused to provide land to the BSF for border infrastructure. While Delhi cleans out illegal infiltrators, TMC accuses the government of having a political agenda against Bengalis.
- Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh suffer from illegal settlement of Pakistani nationals in border zones. Turkish firms enable NGOs to change demography in Nepal, while states like Punjab and J&K suffer slow demographic poisoning!
Thus, when TMC leaders like Mahua Moitra accuse Amit Shah of “failing to stop illegal immigration,” the irony is hard to miss. It is often their own party machinery and the Deep State agents that facilitate infiltration to create vote banks and fissures in Bharat’s social structure.
Conversions
Conversions, especially through coercion and allurement, remain another destabilizing factor. As per the 2011 Census, nearly 6 million Indians changed religion in the preceding decade. States like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and the tribal belts of Madhya Pradesh saw significant Christian conversion activity. While Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal struggle under various forms of Demographic Jihad, like Love Jihad, Population Jihad, etc.
Thus, Mohan Bhagwat’s warning that conversion is a “demographic weapon” is not paranoia – it’s a reflection of historical experience backed by current social phenomena.

The RSS chief’s concerns also have a historical basis. The last time India (then undivided) saw a Muslim population of nearly 26%, the subcontinent was partitioned. However, the partition only drained 60% of the Muslim population from India. The 40% that stayed behind enjoyed years of appeasement as a minority!
The trauma of 1947 remains a living memory, where demography directly fueled calls for a separate Islamic homeland.
Today, the same demographic imbalance is creeping in quietly. States like Assam (35% Muslim), Kerala (27% Muslims), and West Bengal (30% Muslim) already witness political dynamics shaped entirely by community arithmetic. If current trends continue, Hindus could slip below 80% nationally, triggering not only political shifts but also cultural insecurity. Therefore, Mohan Bhagwat’s call is not alarmist – it is a preventive measure against a repeat of Partition’s demographic fault lines.
Mohan Bhagwat and the Kashi-Mathur Temple Question
In a subtle but significant statement, Bhagwat clarified that while the RSS as an organization will not spearhead movements for reclaiming Kashi and Mathura. However, he states that individual swayamsevaks are free to participate. This is a strategic stance. A direct organizational push, as seen in Ayodhya, could risk large-scale nationwide unrest.
By stepping aside institutionally while allowing individual participation, the RSS keeps the flame alive without igniting nationwide turmoil.

- If illegal migration continues unchecked, the border states will effectively turn into “mini-Bangladesh” or “mini-Pakistan”!
- If conversions continue, especially in tribal and border regions, the Hindu cultural majority will weaken further.
Meanwhile, the demographic collapse in the Western and Eastern nations is a warning India cannot afford to ignore. Japan, Europe, and China are all scrambling with late fixes. India still has a demographic window open, but only if decisive action is taken now.
