PM Modi’s First Foreign Trip of Third Term To G7

Prime Minister Modi is all set to attend the G7 summit in Italy’s Apulia. This trip will also be the PM Modi’s first foreign trip after taking oath for the third term. In a twitter post, PM Modi conveyed to all that he has landed in Italy.

Summit’s Venue…

As the current chair of the summit, Italy is hosting a gathering of G7 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France as well as the European Union.

The meeting is scheduled to take place from June 13 to 15, at the lavish Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia. It is anticipated to focus on urgent global issues, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and that of Israel and Hamas.

Dignitaries…

Some of the well known dignitaries apart from PM Modi, who will be gracing this summit with their presence are –

US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, is also expected to attend a meeting regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.

Focus Areas…

Some of the key areas which will be discussed during this summit are-

  • Africa, Climate Change, and Development- These three important topics will be discussed at the start of the summit. The emphasis on how important they are for the development of the Global South and for India.
  • Middle East and Russia-Ukraine- The ongoing hostilities in these regions likely to take center stage. The world leaders are likely to focus their discussions on finding solutions to these challenging geopolitical issues.
  • Artificial Intelligence- Given India’s growing emphasis on its uses, AI will also be discussed.
  • Global Challenges- PM Modi is likely to discuss pressing international issues with other world leaders.

Bilateral Meetings…

PM Modi will be holding bilateral meeting with the Italian PM Giorgia Meloni around 2:45 PM. According to Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, “Their last meeting was at the COP28 Summit in Abu Dhabi in December 2023.” During this meeting both the leaders are likely to discuss future course of action and bilateral ties. PM Modi is also scheduled to meet U.K PM Rishi Sunak at 3 P.M.

India’s G7 Engagement…

This summit will mark India’s 11th engagement in G7 and PM Modi’s 5th consecutive attendance. Overall, the summit’s agenda will be covering important issues like Russia Ukraine war, Food security, middle east issues and artificial intelligence. The foreign secretary stated that India’s regular participation at the summit indicates increasing recognition of Delhi’s efforts to address global issues.
