From Ambassador Baba To IITian Baba: Meet The Unique Babas At Mahakumbh

The Mahakumbh 2025 has officially begun with millions of devotees and Babas from across the world reaching the heart of the city Prayagraj. As millions of devotees are thronging the city to take dip in the Sangam. Among them, some of the Babas (Sages) have captured headlines, for their unconventional and unique spiritual journey. Lets take a look at some of these unique Babas and Sadhus in Mahakumbh 2025.

Kaate Wale Baba

Ramesh Kumar Manjhi, also known as “Kaate Wale Baba,” has become centre of attention for his unique spiritual practice of lying on a bed of thorns. Reportedly, he’s been doing this for the past 40-50 years.

Speaking to ANI he said, “It is all god’s glory that helps me do this (lay on thorns)… I have been doing this every year for the last 40-50 years… I do it because it benefits my body… It never hurts me… I donate half of the ‘dakshina’ I get and use the rest to meet my expenses.”

Ambassador Baba

Mahant Rajgiri, who is famously known as the “Ambassador Baba,” has won hearts of many online. The sage who is over 50 years old and hails from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has caught eye of many. The thing which makes him stand out is his prized possession- a 1973 model Ambassador car. The car, painted in Saffron colour and fully operational, has been Baba’s loyal companion for the past 35 years. He has so far attended four Kumbh Melas and always arrives in his Ambassador car. Thereby, earning the title of ‘Ambassador Baba.’ He even eats, sleeps and lives in his car.

Another fascinating sage at Mahakumbh 2025, is Mahant Vashisht Giri Maharaj, also known as ‘Rudraksha Baba.’ He has come in spotlight because of his extraordinary form of penance. Everyday, he meditates for 12 hours wearing 45 kg Rudraksha crown on his head. Originally, he had pledged to wear 1.25 lakh Rudraksha beads but now he claims to be wearing 2.25 lakh beads on his head.

Explaining his attire, he said it represents his devotion for Lord Shiva. He described Rudraksha as “tears of Lord Shiva,” and claimed it brings peace to his soul.

IITian Baba

Abhay Singh, aka, ‘IITian Baba’ has caught the attention of devotees and social media since the very first day of the Mahakumbh. Singh who is an IIT-Bombay alumnus and former aerospace engineer is making headlines. His extraordinary journey of academia towards spirituality has caught headlines.

Speaking to ANI he said, “I come from Haryana, I went to IIT, then changed to Arts from engineering. That also didn’t work, so I kept changing, and later I arrived at the final truth, reflecting on his unconventional path.” He explained his journey to be one driven by his thirst for knowledge and truth. Transitioning aerospace to arts to finally finding solace in Sanskrit language. Abhay, kept pursuing truth in his spiritual journey.

Talking about Sanskrit he said, “I started exploring how Sanskrit was written and composed and what makes it so special. I had a quest for knowledge. There was again a shift in thought. The question was how the mind works and how you get rid of unwanted thoughts.” Today, IITian Baba, is using his scientific acumen in seeking spirituality. For those seeking Moksha, he strongly advocates, Yoga and Vedic Sutra.

Environment Baba

Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Aruna Giri, also known as Environment Baba, has also caught attention of public. In a unique endeavour, since August 2016, the Baba has been urging his devotees to plant trees. In 2016, he had distributed 27 lakh plants from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Speaking to ANI, he said, “My devotees from almost 30 countries have resolved to plant more than 1 crore trees in our country. In 2016, during a march from Vaishnodevi to Kanyakumari, we planted trees in almost 27 states. After that, devotees started calling me Environment Baba… I have been working on this since 2010… Sanatan Dharma teaches that everyone should plant 2 trees, 1 of which is needed for our final rites and 1 Peepal tree for oxygen. ”
