Delhi Metro Chaos: A Familiar Sight After Namaz?

Must Read

Delhi Metro, known for its disciplined operations, witnessed yet another episode of chaos—this time at Jama Masjid Metro Station. A viral video shows a large group of people jumping over the exit gates post Namaz, raising concerns about security and law enforcement. The incident, which occurred on the night of February 13, 2025, has sparked debate over whether such disruptions, especially after religious gatherings, are becoming a norm.

What Happened at Jama Masjid Metro Station?

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed that the incident took place at 11:22 PM on Shab-e-Barat, an Islamic observance that often sees increased foot traffic in certain areas. According to DMRC, two metro trains arrived at the station simultaneously, leading to overcrowding at the exit gates. The rush was so intense that the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates malfunctioned, unable to handle the pressure.

Instead of waiting for the situation to be managed by metro authorities, many commuters resorted to jumping over the exit gates. The video shows a group of men violating metro rules, a sight that, unfortunately, has become all too familiar after Friday prayers or major Islamic events.

A Pattern Repeating Itself?

This isn’t the first time such chaos has erupted in public spaces post-Namaz or religious gatherings. Over the years, multiple incidents have surfaced where similar groups have disrupted normal functioning in public areas, often shouting slogans and disregarding rules. The viral video has once again brought attention to how certain sections of society fail to respect public infrastructure and law enforcement.

DMRC’s Response

DMRC’s Principal Executive Director (Corporate Communications), Anuj Dayal, addressed the situation, stating:

“The viral video showing people jumping over the exit gates is from Jama Masjid Metro Station. On the evening of February 13, there was a sudden surge in the number of passengers, leading to congestion at the AFC gates. Metro staff and security personnel were present at the spot to manage the situation. However, some passengers panicked and tried to exit by jumping over the gates. The situation was quickly brought under control.”

While DMRC downplayed the incident as a temporary disruption, the video paints a different picture—one of blatant disregard for rules and civic responsibility.

A Call for Stricter Enforcement

With repeated instances of such behavior, questions arise about the effectiveness of metro security in handling such situations. Should stricter penalties be imposed for those violating rules? Should CISF personnel be given more authority to take immediate action? Unless decisive steps are taken, incidents like these will continue to disrupt public spaces, making life difficult for law-abiding citizens.
